Solar hot water on the Northern Beaches

Updated October 2026

The Northern Beaches get plenty of sun for most of the year, and solar hot water turns that into some of the lowest running costs of any system. It also needs the most honest advice before you buy, because the upfront cost is the highest and it does not suit every roof. We are a referral service, not an installer. The licensed hot water plumbers we work with install, repair and replace solar hot water systems across the Beaches, with licensed electricians on electric-boosted systems and licensed gas fitters on gas-boosted ones, as NSW requires, and they will tell you plainly if your site suits a heat pump better.

How solar hot water works

Collector panels on the roof absorb heat from the sun and transfer it to water stored in a tank. There are two main layouts. Thermosiphon systems put the tank on the roof above the panels, so water circulates naturally. Split systems keep the tank at ground level with a small pump moving water up to the collectors, which looks neater and puts less weight on the roof. Every system has a booster, electric or gas, that tops up the heating on cloudy winter days.

A north-facing roof with little shading does the job best. East or west orientations still work with some loss of output. Your installer assesses the roof before quoting.

Lifespan, running costs and incentives

Collectors commonly serve 15 to 20 years, though the tank may need replacing sooner. For much of the year the sun does most or all of the heating, and the booster only works hard through winter.

Upfront, solar is the most expensive common option, sitting above the typical heat pump range of $3,000 to $6,000 installed once roof work, the tank and boosting are counted. Eligible systems attract federal Small-scale Technology Certificates, and replacing an old electric tank can also qualify under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme. Rebates can cut thousands off the installed price, and the installer quotes the net figure, so compare quoted out-of-pocket numbers rather than brochure prices.

Worth saying plainly: for many households, a heat pump now delivers similar running-cost savings for less upfront, especially if you already have rooftop solar panels. A good installer will quote both when asked.

Repair or replace

Solar systems have more parts than a plain tank: collectors, pumps, sensors, valves and the booster. Pumps, valves and sensors are routine repairs, and a failed booster element is a standard job. A tank leaking from the cylinder means replacement. If collectors fail on an old system, compare the repair cost against a new heat pump or solar system, because collector work on a 15-year-old system rarely pays its way.

Licensing

NSW requires a licensed plumber for solar hot water installation, a licensed electrician for electric boosting and wiring, and a licensed gas fitter for gas boosting. Rebate eligibility adds its own requirements, which the installers we refer meet.

Frequently asked questions

Is solar hot water worth it on the Northern Beaches?

With a well-oriented, unshaded roof, yes, running costs are about as low as hot water gets. The honest comparison is against a heat pump, which costs less upfront and performs similarly for many homes. Get both quoted with rebates applied and compare payback, not sticker price.

What happens on cloudy days or in winter?

The booster takes over. Every solar hot water system has an electric or gas booster that tops up heating when the sun cannot keep up, so you still get hot showers through a wet week in July.

Solar hot water or solar panels with a heat pump?

If you already have, or plan to add, solar panels, a heat pump timed to run in daylight often beats dedicated solar hot water on total cost and keeps your roof space for power generation. An installer can run the numbers for your roof and usage.

How long does a solar hot water system last?

Collectors commonly last 15 to 20 years. Tanks, pumps and valves wear out sooner and are replaceable along the way. Coastal exposure shortens component life, so homes near the beach should expect more frequent servicing.
